Haweswater Aqueduct Resilience Programme (HARP)
GLIL Infrastructure entered into a partnership with Equitix and Strabag SE, the major Austrian construction and engineering group, to form Cascade Infrastructure Limited (Cascade) to manage the finance, design, build and maintenance of the Haweswater Aqueduct Resilience Programme (HARP).
HARP is a major scheme to future proof drinking water supplies in the North West of England. The project will replace and maintain six tunnels along the 110 km Haweswater Aqueduct, which has been in operation for over 70 years and supplies water from the Lake District to 2.5 million residents across Cumbria, Lancashire and Greater Manchester.
The c.£3bn contract was awarded to Cascade by United Utilities, and is the first project in the UK water sector to be delivered through the Direct Procurement for Customer (“DPC”) model, requiring water or waste water companies to competitively tender services in relation to the delivery of certain major infrastructure projects.
