GLIL members commit £400m to accelerate expansion
19 August 2026
GLIL Infrastructure (GLIL), the infrastructure investment fund created by pension funds for pension funds, is continuing its growth following an additional £400m of commitments from its existing investors.
The new commitments from LPPI, West Yorkshire Pension Fund, Merseyside Pension Fund and Greater Manchester Pension Fund demonstrate the continued commitment of GLIL's partners to growing their shared infrastructure portfolio. The capital will enable GLIL to continue investing in essential UK infrastructure through an approach designed around the priorities of pension funds, combining strong governance, long-term ownership and sustainable value creation.
GLIL was launched with two founding members and £500m of capital commitments in 2015. Since then, it has grown to £4.5bn in committed capital as at 30th June 2026, investing on behalf of pension funds and pools with a UK-wide portfolio of assets spanning renewable energy, utilities, ports, logistics, trains, digital infrastructure, hospitals and schools.
Recent key investments demonstrate GLIL’s growing portfolio across these sectors.
The fund has expanded its digital infrastructure platform by acquiring from Yondr a majority interest in a hyperscale data centre campus in South East England, complementing its existing investment in Cornerstone, the UK’s largest mobile tower company.
It has also broadened its transport and logistics portfolio through its acquisition of a minority stake in Sølvtrans, the world’s leading wellboat operator with a dominant market position in the UK.
It is now looking to further expand its member base, using its scale and its expertise to help more pension funds efficiently access the benefits of investing in UK infrastructure. This follows the government’s Fit for the Future consultation, and its encouragement of pension funds to increase investment in UK infrastructure and support sustainable economic growth.
GLIL has also strengthened its origination, execution and value creation capabilities as it pursues its next phase of expansion.
In November 2025, LPPI – GLIL’s Alternative Investment Fund Manager – appointed James Harraway from Infracapital as Head of Value Creation in its Direct Infrastructure Team. It also appointed Daniel Hobson, formerly Head of Infrastructure Asset Management, to the newly created role of Head of Origination and Execution and promoted Jonathan Ord to Head of Direct Infrastructure.
Jonathan Ord, Head of Direct Infrastructure at GLIL, said: “Our ability to collaborate is what sets us apart. We uniquely combine pension funds’ resources and expertise to create real scale, and connect with other partners to help them efficiently invest directly in UK infrastructure.
“Our first decade has shown the strength of our approach, and we’re excited to use this additional capital to keep building on this, as we have done through our recent investments in digital infrastructure and transport infrastructure.
“Our pipeline will remain broad, but with a particular focus on the energy transition and digitalisation – areas where the UK needs significant investment – and we’ll be exploring ways we can start to take on additional construction risk, applying the operational experience we’ve built within our team.”
